Winchester Soroptimists are part of Soroptimist International (SI), a worldwide organisation for women in management and the professions, working through service projects to advance human rights and the status of women. The word Soroptimist comes from the Latin words soror meaning "sister" and optima meaning "best", and loosely translates as "best for women". Since its formation in 1921, membership of Soroptimist International has grown to nearly 95,000 women across the world. To find out more about Soroptimism see the pages on Soroptimist International of Great Britain and Ireland. Winchester Soroptimists have their own website, where you can find out more about events we have organised, our latest news and our projects. There is also a contact page, if you want to get in touch with us. |
Soroptimists enjoying themselves at a 'lean lunch' Each Soroptimist International club is based on a geographical area, such as a town or city, and members meet locally on a regular basis, both to organise projects that advance the Soroptimist ideals and to enjoy each other's company and have fun. The voluntary work, or 'Programme Action' includes fundraising, lobbying and research activities in the areas of Health, Environment, Education, Economic and Social Development, Human Rights and the Status of Women, and International Goodwill and Understanding.
